DING DONG! The bigot is gone

Racist JT Ready with Russell Pearce
AZ State Sen. Russell Pearce, of course. Beaten out of his office by another Mormon Republican from Mesa, AZ, who said he was going to bring class to the position.  The inference obviously that Pearce had none, which is well known outside the Arizona Tea Party and the ranks of double-digit IQs that support Pearce.  Jerry Lewis, a complete newcomer, received 53.4 percent of the vote to Pearce’s 45.4.  It seems to me eight percentage points represent a mandate the bigotry of the Russell Pearce legacy.

To boot, the man was the Arizona State Senate President, and perhaps one of the most influential politicians in the state’s history.  He also introduced the anti-immigration Bill SB1070, which had its most strict features on illegal aliens struck down by a federal court.  Pearce is also the first officeholder in Arizona to be recalled.

According to Bloomberg’s BusinessWeek, Earl de Berge of the Phoenix-based Behavior Research Center, a nonpartisan polling company, said “There is a deep dissatisfaction in Arizona for what is viewed as politics in the extreme.”  As a resident of Arizona, I cannot agree with this statement.  From the Governor throughout the Republican side of the State Legislature, there is nothing but extremism apparent.  Just look at the state’s gun laws.  And these people did not get into office without an extremist public electing them.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, said, "With Sen. Russell Pearce's defeat in this recall election, everyone who practices the politics of fear and division was put on notice.”  Whether these lawmakers are bright enough to realize this is another thing entirely.  One thing is certain, Arizona pseudo-Gov. Jan Pearce will never get it.  She has vigilantly, virtually all by herself, put the redistricting of the state on hold by removing the Commission’s chairman Colleen Coyle Mathis.
But before leaving the demise of Arizona’s favorite racist despot, it is appropriate to show some last minute dirty tactics of Pearce supporters.  The candidate’s Tea Party supporters launched a deceptive robocall to Hispanic voters to draw them away from opponent Jerry Lewis.  A man with a Spanish accent says:

“Voters beware. If you plan to vote this Tuesday, you should know that both candidates for State Senator, Russell Pearce and Jerry Lewis, are Republicans. The only other candidate, Olivia Cortez was forced to withdraw last month. You can protest this one-sided election by writing in your own candidate.”

And the Tea Party’s Ron Ludders, who commissioned the message, says “This is an educational situation, totally,” adding, “There’s nothing sinister about this.”  Without a doubt, this is the epitome of “Give me a break!”

So at the end of the day we can gloat over one down, one to go.  Next, impeach Arizona’s bogus Gov. Jan Brewer.  Could the country’s meanest Sheriff Joe Arpaio be next?

Bizarre Arizona politics: State Sen. Russell Pearce afraid Olivia Cortes will rock the boat - Cortes forced to opt out of recall race

I know that many of you throughout the U.S. are hooked on Arizona politics.  After all, what better way to get a good laugh?  Today is no different. If you are following the recall election of the infamous State Sen. Russell Pearce, the first in Arizona’s history, you know there was a sham candidate by the name of Olivia Cortes.  I say “was” because she pulled out of the race Oct. 6, many say at the behest of Pearce and his gang of thugs.

If you haven’t been watching, Cortes was recruited by Greg Western of the Phoenix East Valley Tea Party to siphon off votes from Pearce’s only other opponent, Jerry Lewis.  Western, the EVTP chairman, has repeatedly said, as has Cortes, that he doesn’t know who is putting up the money for her candidacy.  Cortes had no organization and would not speak to the media.  This was all challenged in court recently by Phoenix attorney Tom Ryan who wanted her off the ballot.

But the ruling by Judge Edward Burke found Cortes did no wrong, thus, no reason to throw her off the ballot.  But when it came to the testimony of Greg Western, who just before backing Cortes professed to be an ardent supporter of Russell Pearce for years, Burke lowered the boom.  He said:

"His {Greg Western} testimony that he has no idea who designed, posted and paid for campaign signs supporting Cortes or who paid the professional circulators is too improbable to be believed.  The court finds that Pearce supporters recruited Cortes, a political neophyte, to run in the recall election to siphon Hispanic votes from Lewis to advance Pearce's recall-election bid."

An Arizona Republic newspaper opinion commented: “There can scarcely be a voter anywhere in the {Maricopa} county, much less {Pearce’s} District 18, who doesn't know that Cortes has been propped up by supporters of recalled Senate President Russell Pearce to draw votes away from his principal competitor, Jerry Lewis.”  Stephen Lemons, who writes the Feathered Bastard blog for the Phoenix New Times quoted Ryan as saying, "The Pearce forces did not want this hearing to go forward tomorrow…”

Lemons continues that Ryan’s co-counsel Micheal Wright said it was all part of a deal he and Ryan had offered Cortes' lawyer Anthony Tsontakis before the first hearing where she was forced to testify: i.e., Cortes pulls out and the lawsuit is dropped.  "This morning, they asked if the offer was still open," added Wright.  Of course there is still the question of whether laws were broken in Cortes’ candidacy and Pearce, his supporters and family will have to answer to this soon.

Laurie Roberts, an Arizona Republic columnist, had some interesting observations on the “Si se puede!” slogan that apparently originated with the mysterious crew that put up the Cortes candidacy signs.  The term is Spanish for “Yes it is possible or Yes it can be done.”  Apparently not in the case of Cortes.  For one thing, Roberts says Cortes didn’t even know what the word “incumbent” meant until last week.  Further, the columnist thinks Judge Burke basically called Greg Western a liar.  Her opinion is that after this fiasco, Jerry Lewis will probably get all the Hispanic vote.

The recall election date is November 8, and it is hard to imagine anything else as bizarre as the events that have already happened that could occur in the next four weeks.  But, then, this election is being held in Arizona and we all know that anything can happen—and usually does—there.

ARIZONA POLITICS: Is stealth “candidate” Olivia Cortez really running for Russell Pearce’s Arizona State Senate seat?

AZ State Sen. Russell Pearce
I’ve heard of stealth bombers, stealth helicopters, even a stealth attraction.  But it took Phoenix New Times columnist Stephen Lemons to come up with Olivia Cortes as a stealth candidate.  Stealth means secretive, clandestine, and that is just what Cortes has been; not answering her phone or a knock at the front door.  Not defining her candidacy or what she actually stands for.  In the absence of any statement, one might think she stands for…Russell Pearce.

Lemons confirmed himself that petition circulators are telling signers that getting Cortes in the race will help to split the vote in favor of Arizona State Sen. Russell Pearce.  The Phoenix New Times writer actually went to the Mesa, AZ, library and was asked to sign the petition to place Cortes’ name on the ballot.  That’s when he affirmed what the petitioners were saying.  You can read more about his conversation with the petition company here.

This is also is supported by a reporterfrom the Arizona Republic, GaryNelson, who says, “A vote for Olivia Cortes is a vote for Russell Pearce.”  He had the same experience as Stephen Lemons in being asked to sign a petition that he was told would split the vote to help Pearce.  This all substantiates an earlier allegation by Randy Parraz, one of the Pearce recall organizers, who said he had heard the same thing.  Parraz’s comment when hearing the latest was, “She’s busted.”

Russell Pearce says he has nothing to do with Cortes running against him, but even a two-year-old could figure this out.  These are the same bullying tactics Pearce has been using for years and they have finally caught up with him.  Arizona politics continue to provide the nation’s media with the most laughable gang of idiots running a state in the country.

I’ll even bet there are a number of his Republican cronies who are rooting for Lewis and will be happy to see this bigot go.  They won’t be alone.  Amen.
