One of Donald Trump's biggest opponents is focusing on states to make sure there is no funny business going on in voting. Their plan is...
"to dig up the actual motivations, communications, and moneyed interests behind restrictive voter laws—and to potentially tie them back to national figures like former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the Heritage Foundation's Hans von Spakovsky, or Trump administration officials themselves."
You remember Kansas' Kris Kobach? He's the guy who teamed up with Arizona's Russell Pearce to pass the state's immigration law SB-1070 that was eventually repealed. He roams around the country making trouble for people he doesn't like, often teaming up with ALEC. This was also Sheriff Joe Arpaio's state, who ardently enforced SB-1070, and was fully supported by Donald Trump. Arpaio was finally voted out of office.
“Voter suppression is the corruption of democracy itself, and most of that corruption isn't happening in Washington, DC, but in the state and local governments that set the rules for voting,” said Austin Evers, executive director of American Oversight in the Daily Beast. After two years working on the federal government, the organization is now turning its attention to the states using the same model to fight corruption there.
And the American farmer is "running out of patience with President Donald Trump's trade war with China," according to CNN. Already facing a 25% tariff imposed by China last year, the farm folk were willing to tag along for talks between xi jinping and T-rump, but the patience is now thinning as commodity prices are plummeting. At the same time, Arkansas' favorite idiot, Sen. Tom Cotton, just schluffed off the farmers' dilemma.
And finally, Trump has "gleefully" compared himself to an authoritarian strongman, as reported by AlterNet. Here's the scenario...
"Hungary’s democratic institutions are under attack from its own Prime Minister Viktor Orban, but you wouldn’t know it from President Donald Trump treatment of the authoritarian leader on Monday in the Oval Office."
It seems that Trump refused to meet with Orban after the authoritarian president "shut down Hungary’s opposition media, eliminated independent courts, drove a prestigious U.S. university out of Budapest and spewed hateful rhetoric toward Muslims and, in more subtle terms, Jews." Even with disdain from Europe, Trump saw fit to praise Orban from the White House. It's just something between two authoritarians.
It’s all about guns in the state of Arizona, no matter which side you are on.In the case of the blunderingly elected and sorely unqualified Gov. Jan Brewer, no matter what the particular issue is, if it has anything to do with President Barack Obama, she is against it.It’s because Brewer could see in the finger wagging incident photograph that Obama was thinking to himself, ‘Why am I wasting time on this moron.’My words but don’t you agree it’s possible?

Now Fast and furious was a botched event with the death of Border Agent Brian Terry that is still getting some attention, especially since the recent killing of Border Agent Nicholas Ivie.Re. Fast and Furious, the GOV said, "With today's release of the Inspector General's investigation, it is clear that ‘failure' is the word that best describes the ill-conceived gun-walking probe known as Operation Fast & Furious.”
This is basically true but hardly credible coming from someone who runs a state with the loosest gun laws in the country and one that supplies most of the arms for the Mexican cartels, assault rifles with which they carry out their slaughterhouse south of the border.

And then there was the sometime mentally challenged Brewer’s outburst over the death of Nick Ivie, a false claim that the whole incident was Barack Obama’s fault for not securing our border with Mexico.She did it in haste and with the same arrogant disdain she uses in any criticism of the President.She was wrong, of course, even criticized by Arizona Sen. John McCain, because later it was determined that Ivie was killed by friendly fire.Brewer had no comment.

In the Phoenix East Valley Tribune, Mike McClellan calls Arizona “Mexico’s firearm superstore” as well as “Mexico’s Walmart of guns.”He also quotes Jan Brewer and mentions Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley’s claim that “maybe the Fast and Furious scandal had something to do with Agent Ivie’s death.”The Iowa Senator has been a loose cannon on F&F, along with another unreliable Republican, Rep. Darrell Issa from California.Brewer at least in good company.
McClellan reminds us of the New York Times article that pointed out the fact that Mexico has only one gun store, and residents are restricted to owning no more than a .38 caliber with gun permits taking months.Then there was the Fortune piece estimating that according to the Mexican government there are 2,000 weapons a day that come into their country from the U.S.I wrote about both of these issues earlier in this blog in pointing out Arizona’s loose firearms laws.

Everyone knows, and Mike McClellan confirms, that the National Rifle Assn. (NRA), makes the laws on gun ownership and use today in many states around the country.Not inept governors like Arizona’s Jan Brewer and her incompetent Republican legislature.The NRA has strong support from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an organization that has steadily lost members (41) since it was exposed by the Center for Media Democracy.

Jan brewer wagging her finger in the face of President Obama just minutes after he had deplaned in Mesa, Arizona.Within days a local music teacher, Leonard Clark, filed papers with Sec. of State Ken Bennett to recall Brewer.In his words: “The whole finger wagging incident crystallized it.She is embarrassing our state.”A lot of Arizonans agree.See the “Brewer Doesn’t Speak for Me” site.
The Daily Beast concurs with Harry Reid (below) that this airport tarmac incident was “emblematic of the Arizona GOP’s increasing extremism, and it may be turning off voters.But that’s not all.The state GOP created a T-shirt with the encounter image on it with the phrase under it “Just one more year!”Aside from being tacky, it is in complete bad taste, extending the disrespect pseudo Gov. Brewer showed the President, but indicative of Republican taste in Arizona.
Arizona will be forever known in the sports world as the place where one of the most prestigious annual college sports events, the Fiesta Bowl, was almost brought to its knees by a corrupt chief executive.This wasn’t an underling to blame; it’s the top guy, the one who can be credited for much of the bowl’s success.John Junker was caught with his hand in the political donation cookie jar.
Junker was charged with reimbursing staff members with bowl money for making contributions to local and state candidates who helped the bowl to obtain financial subsidies.This is illegal.Gary Husk, bowl lobbyist and Junker associate, is also being investigated.Current and former Fiesta Bowl employees have alleged that Husk was involved in the scheme with Junker.The Fiesta Bowl has since recovered from the fiasco under new management.
National Democrats led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid say the GOP is now controlled by extremists like Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.The Gov. is linked with other zealots like former Arizona State Sen. Russell Pearce, who was the sponsor of the state’s anti-immigration bill, and who was recalled from his Senate seat, the first time ever.
He is joined by Kris Kobach, current Kansas Sec. of State and fierce anti-immigration critic, who actually wrote the Arizona law SB-1070 with the American Legislative Exchange Counsil (ALEC).Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain, failed 2008 presidential candidate, says nobody pays any attention to Reid, whom he characterized as not “totally rational.”This from a man who chose Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate.

So what does former State Sen. Russell Pearce do when they boot him out of the Senate?He goes on talk radio, of course.Pearce is known for his hateful and racist ways, having befriended fellow racist J.T. Ready, who is also a self-proclaimed neo-Nazi.Stephen Lemons of The Phoenix New Times described Pearce’s show as xenophobic, self-adulation, and delusional in the host’s “radio cafeteria of hate.”Lemons actually tuned into one of the shows.
Expecting the worst and getting it, it was Pearce at his best ranting and raving over illegal immigration, completely demonizing Latinos.His phone guest was former Congressman Tom Tancredo from Colorado who described the struggle against immigration as “a matter of the survival of Western Civilization.”Lemons commented on the two as engaging “in an aural love-fest better left for a room at a Best Western.”Pearce plans to run again for the Senate in November.
Sheriff "Joe" Arpaio
Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the baddest in the West, has a volunteer posse that he constantly raves over.Some carry guns, and can even make arrest under the supervision of a regular deputy, but can also be former criminals themselves.A local TV station, KPHO, investigated the posse and found arrests for assault, drug possession, domestic violence, sex crimes against children, disorderly conduct, impersonating an officer and more.Most are still on the posse.
Douglas Clark is a posse member as well as constable who rolled a county vehicle at 91 mph in a 45 mph zone, used his siren while not on a call, and used the red/blue lights installed on his personal vehicle to look for his wife’s lost item on the road. He also detained a driver and passenger at gunpoint who had backed into his car when he was off duty.The posse does not receive a salary but is covered under county insurance.

I do not know whether or not Lance Armstrong is guilty of doping charges.He gave up his fight against the U.S Anti-Doping Agency which could mean he is tired of the struggle or maybe he’s guilty.Michael Rosenberg of Sports Illustrated said: “Doping charges are serious, the evidence is significant and some credible people have accused Armstrong. (I mean, how much of a jerk would Armstrong have to be for this many people to want to frame him?)”

But there are those of us who won’t give up on the issue and Sanjay Sanghoee is one of those writing in the Huff Post.Described in some media as a “dispute,” Sanghoee says the Empire State Bldg. shooting was “barbarism and insanity.”And he thinks many American gun owners use their guns to experience a “sense of control and power that only a firearm can impart.”I agree and must add that in many cases a firearm is carried to replace or bolster a man’s masculinity.
Amy Sullivan in The New Republic states: “Barack Obama and Mitt Romney may not want to talk about gun control, but events are conspiring against them.”Both have voiced their opposition to the mass shootings, apparently without a clue that something needs to be done right now.And if they are aware, it’s all put on the backburner until after the November elections while many more are likely to be shot and killed before then.In this respect, politics stink.

It won’t.Changing the heart of the American people may well be what’s essential, to improve the lots of the American people.”To that Amy Sullivan replies “Poppycock.”My opinion is that by the time Romney’s concept comes to fruition, hundreds of thousands more innocent people will be killed by guns.
But there are improvements in public attitudes toward gun control sounded by an August 2012 study by the Public Religion Research Institute.In that poll, 52% favor stricter firearms regulation compared to 44% against.However, this study was done following a series of recent mass shootings and is likely to mellow considerably after the shock wears off.Support of gun control has dropped significantly since its high of 66% back in 2000.
The Institute for Economics and Peace has ranked states according to which are the most violent based on homicide, violent crime, incarceration rates, as well as the availability of firearms.The top five are Louisiana (#1 20th year in a row), Tennessee, Nevada, Florida and Arizona.Only one of these states, Arizona, experienced one of the recent mass killings; the Tucson massacre in Jan. of 2011 where 6 died, 13 wounded including former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords.

How can the radical right take offense at Kathy Griffin's severed head picture, considering the way Ted Nugent unleashed his numerous hateful comments against former President Barack Obama? Griffin was punished for what she did. Nugent became the White House guest of Donald Trump. Nugent is also a gun nut who, "...went on a rant onstage during a concert and said vile things about both Obama and Clinton, using expletives to refer to both. This lowlife said at a NRA convention in 2012, “We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November.”
Back in October of 2012, a North Carolina Tea Party racist hung President Obama in effigy, and took his presentation on a tour around the country, ending up in New York city. I conversed by email with VR Phipps, who was a Command member of the Tea Party from Faison, NC, who denied everything he had done. Including even being a Tea Party member. North Carolina also has concentrations of active hate groups, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, including Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazi, Racist Skinhead, Neo-Confederate, Black Separatist, Anti-LGBT and Anti-Muslim.

Okay, let's get down to the nitty gritty of this whole fiasco. Kathy Griffin posed with a bloody, severed head of Donald Trump, and everyone, including the Secret service goes ballistic, somehow assuming a threat against DT's life. Ridiculous, of course. But a Tea Party nut can hang Barack Obama in effigy while he is still in the Oval Office, parade this around the country including New York city, hardly drawing major attention. Ted Nugent denigrates both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and is rewarded with an invitation to the Oval Office by Donald Trump.
Kathy Griffin commented, "This is a woman thing," as is much of what Donald Trump's past problems have been. No one will forget his most famous comment about what a "star" could do to women...
"I'm automatically attracted to beautiful [women]—I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star they let you do it. You can do anything ... Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."
The upside to this whole thing is that Kathy Griffin has promised not to be intimidated by all this; rather, that she will continue to use Trump as fodder for her comedic material. "I'm going to make fun of him more now," she said.
It looks like gun violence has finally gotten the attention of the two presidential candidates.Barack Obama told an African-American group in New Orleans on July 26, that we’re lax in the control of weapons and wants to work with lawmakers to rectify this.Mitt Romney, in the perfect National Rifle Assn. (NRA) profile, said changing laws on the issue wouldn’t prevent future incidents like the Aurora, Colo. movie shooting where 12 died and 58 were injured.

First of all, the President should be infuriated over gun violence; along with the Aurora massacre, his hometown of Chicago is currently going through the worst episodes in decades, almost exclusively within the black community.He wasn’t.Romney’s lame answer comes from cow-towing to the gun lobby for the votes of gun nuts.He even mistakenly said many of the weapons used by James Holmes were obtained illegally.They were all legal, including the ammunition.

So who’s for and who is against gun control?You will be surprised at some that are in favor and others who aren’t.
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), has already prepared a bill to limit the sale of high-capacity magazines like the one used by James Holmes when he killed 12 and injured 58 in the Aurora, Colo. movie theatre.
Arch conservative Bill Kristol said that people do have a right to handguns and hunting rifles but doesn’t think they have the right to assault rifles.
House Rep. Kevin McCarthy, number three Republican from California, sounds open to discussions on gun control but wants to have more facts first.
Another House Rep., an Oregon Democrat, feels the U.S. has given up on gun control.
Sen. Barbara Boxer from California says that Congress must pass sensible gun legislation.
Former Democratic Sen. from Connecticut, Christopher Dodd, called for more restrictions on guns and questions why Americans should be able to buy assault weapons.
Mitt Romney, of course, has put his support firmly behind the 2nd Amendment, a move no doubt orchestrated by wacky Wayne LaPierre of the NRA, and thinks new gun laws would not have made any difference in the Aurora tragedy.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has challenged and chastised both presidential contenders on not coming out stronger for gun control.He comments: “I can tell you I don’t think there’s any other developed country in the world that has remotely the problem we have.
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein wants to have a “sane” discussion on gun control and ban assault weapons.
Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) is in favor of a ban against large capacity ammunition clips.
Fox TV’s ultra-conservative Bill O’Reilly called for Congress to pass a law requiring the registration of all "heavy" weapons to be reported to the FBI because it "makes sense.”
Lauren Fox in US News said, there is no evidence to indicate that any existing gun law would have prevented James Holmes from doing what he did in Aurora, Colo.
House Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) wants President Obama to go around Congress using his executive authority to enact better gun laws.Her husband was killed in the
1993 Long Island Rail Road
shooting massacre.
Michael Moore, Academy Award winning filmmaker’s statement says it all: "We have to see that we're a part of each other, and we have to take care of each other. The reason why they have universal health care in Canada and Britain, these other places? Because they believe if one suffers, everybody suffers," he tells the "Piers Morgan Tonight" host. "That is not our mentality, our mentality is 'I got mine, you get yours, and the hell with everybody else.'"

And last, but certainly not least, there is Barack Obama’s views on gun control which have mellowed significantly since he was a Senator from Illinois.The President must get reelected; another GOP administration in the White House and control of Congress would lead to a disaster for the U.S. in my mind.If Obama is cooling it until his reelection in November, after which he plans to lower the boom on the NRA and pass gun control, that’s fine with me.Only if.
It would appear that we have accumulated more than a modicum of support for gun control following the bloodbath in Aurora, Colo., which in itself is a tragedy that this issue continues to be forced into the forefront by the killing and injuring of innocent individuals.All because of NRA head Wayne LaPierre and his leadership of lackeys and a fear-mongering reign over the organization’s membership.But maybe this is the year and we should all be ready.
OK, someone has already said that but I just found out it can actually happen.It didn’t seem wrong to me to simply ask an individual if they were actually the person whose name was on the voting rolls.If I have to prove who I am to get on an airplane, and I do, then why not when I vote?But then I started checking into the demographics of those that would be affected most, plus reading a recent report of just how rare voter fraud is in the U.S.Now I’m not sure either way.
Those most likely to be affected are the poor, minorities and elderly.Is it a coincidence that much of this group would be most likely to vote for Democrats?No it definitely is not just fate since the major force behind voter ID laws is Republican led.As an example, according to Open Channel on NBC, the ultra conservative organization American Legislative Exchange Counsil (ALEC) has launched a “flurry” of voter ID bills.So much for GOP credibility.
Let’s talk demographics starting with Hispanics.The Latinos population represents 16.3%, based on the latest Census figures.For a family of four, the poverty level is considered to be around $22,350 and that represents 13% of U.S. population.The elderly defined as being age 65 plus number 13%.This comes in at a grand total of 42.3% of the U.S. population.Let’s assume the majority of these three groups would lean to voting for Democrats.
According to 2008 election figures, there were 213,313,508 eligible voters representing 70.2% of the U.S population.But only 132,653,958 voted in 2008 or just 43.6% of the population and 62.6% of eligible voters.The question, of course, is just how much of the 42.3% above is represented in the 132,653,958 that voted in 2008, or better yet, not represented.
The turnout rate for the voting age population in 2008 was 56.9% and we might wonder if some or all of the above profile are included. In either case, voter ID laws could certainly only further discourage whatever number that was.
The hardest hit will be the minorities, particularly Hispanics in certain states.Arrests through Arizona’s MaricopaCounty sweeps by Sheriff Joe Arpaio have put the fear of potential jail, at least harassment into even the legals in the state and nationwide, even though they have proof of legality.USA Today reports, “Every year, 600,000 more Latinos become eligible voters, making them a potentially potent voting force.”The problem is getting them to the polls.
And this will certainly change with the younger Latino generation that is on the way.I say that by witnessing first-hand here in Arizona how these young undocumenteds are applying for President Obama’s Deferred Action Plan in large numbers.Although they are illegal according to Arizona’s Gov. Jan Brewer, they are openly defying her executive order against giving them state benefits, including obtaining driver’s licenses to get to work.
Young Turks expose GOP support of voter ID is to win elections:
The stupid antics of Brewer and disgraced former State Senator Russell Pearce, including some in the state legislature, will come back to haunt the Arizona GOP in future years.A Hispanic voting bloc large enough to vote these fanatics out of office can’t come soon enough for most progressives in the state.Pew Research reported 6.6 million Latinos voted in 2010, adding that they expect a turnout of a record 12.2 million in November, which would be a 26% increase over 2008.
But when it comes to voter fraud, one of the primary reasons Republicans are pushing voter ID,a study has found that it is almost non-existent.2,068 cases of alleged voter fraud were analyzed and only 10 cases of alleged in-person voter impersonation were found since 2000.That’s less than one per year.Based on 146 million U.S. registered voters, that comes out to one in every 15 million registered voters.It would appear the GOP has no grounds for suspicion there.
Raging prejudice but it happens
Republican Mississippi state representative, Bill Denny, who sponsored his state’s voter ID law, said, “Whether you have proof of it or not, what in the heavens is wrong with showing an ID at polls?"Here’s why.The state has a black population of 37%, Hispanics 2.7%.Total population is 2,983,922 so that means a full compliment eligible to vote would equal a total number of 1,184,617 that could throw Denny and other bigots like him out of office in November.
The answer is education before enacting voter ID laws.We must educate the population on just how important is to register and vote in all elections.Using activists reaching the poor and elderly, and in the black and Latino communities, to get the word out that to expect representation of their needs, they must go to the polls and elect those who believe what they believe.And most of all, we must take the fear out of voting for minorities.
In the past few years, particularly after the Supreme Court decision to open the door to unlimited contributions by corporations and unions, secret money has poured into presidential and congressional campaigns.Following that decision in January of 2010, the President remarked that the high court had, "given a green light to a new stampede of special interest money in our politics."

According to OpenSecrets.org, Obama’s large individual contributions are 63.2%, Romney 82.6%.From Stateofenlightenment.com, Obama’s corporate donations are spread around pretty evenly between law, education, media, government, technology and finance.But Romney comes in at 80% alone from finance with the remaining 20% spread between law, real estate and technology.Obama has received no PAC contributions, Romney $901,524.
But the American public is fed up with this mystery cash going into political action committees (PACS) and other organizations that are formed specifically to raise millions of dollars to defeat the opposing candidate and who are also able to protect the identity of their donors.They just may not take it anymore.Already protesters have forced 38 corporations to cut ties with the American Legislative Exchange Council(ALEC), known as a corporate bill mill.
Following the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling, Congress did not act on a bill to require disclosure of the donors.In Justice Anthony Kennedy’s opinion following the ruling, he and seven other Justices in agreeing with Citizens United also upheld disclosure rules and emphasized there should be transparency.They even envisioned voters getting campaign information from laptops or smart phones.
Kennedy added, “Prompt disclosure of expenditures can provide shareholders and citizens with the information needed to hold corporations and elected officials accountable for their positions and supporters.”Further, “This transparency enables the electorate to make informed decisions and give proper weight to different speakers and messages.”Well, it hasn’t happened and isn’t likely to happen as long as the GOP control the House.

Undisclosed donor ads were less than 2% in 2006, jumping to 25% in 2008, 40% in 2010.It is obvious that candidates along with corporations do not want the source of this new found gold mine to be revealed and that, in itself, should tell the public that something very wrong is going on.Otherwise, why wouldn’t both sides be eager for the American people to know how a political campaign is being run and who is supporting who?
Mark Sherman said in the Huff Post, “More than 8 in 10 Americans in a poll by The Associated Press and the NationalConstitutionCenter support limits on the amount of money given to groups that are trying to influence U.S. elections.”He also said, “The ringing endorsement of First Amendment freedoms matched the public's view of the Constitution as an enduring document, even as Americans hold the institutions of government, other than the military, in very low regard.”
In addition, the poll found that Americans want protection for minorities in elections, probably as a result of the voter ID laws passed in many states.Sherman commented, “The laws mainly have been backed by Republican lawmakers who say they want to combat voter fraud. Democrats, citing academic studies that found there is very little voter fraud…”In fact the laws appear to be just a hurdle to make it harder for those minorities voting Democrat.
Ah, the games politicians play.The big question is just how long will John and Jane Q. Public put up with it?Perhaps that’s a question we can answer in November.

David Koch is dead and many in this country are either openly or silently rejoicing and waiting for the other shoe to drop. That would be his brother Charles; his demise can't come soon enough for anyone who values life over the profits of industry. Here's the scenario...

Yes, he and his brother, Charles, are at least somewhat responsible for the shape of the planet today as it fights to survive ecologically. We can also thank the two Kochs for the state of a political scene that is fraught with lies and underhanded governing, plus the use of illicit power to promote their libertarian beliefs. Both brothers were former members of the ultra-conservative John Birch Society, which their father, Fred, helped found. You can't get much more radical right.

The severity of these issues shows just how greedy these two brothers were, along with their libertarian party. Charles and David "regarded" centralized government as a scourge akin to Communism." Of course, it was always obvious why the pair despised government; it was the only thing keeping them in line from totally screwing the American public. Another conservative William F. Buckley, Jr., called the Kochs’ views “Anarcho-Totalitarianism.”
Steven Rosenfeld, in an AlterNet Commentary provides "11 things the Koch brothers didn’t want you to know." It ranges from "The family’s $100 billion fortune comes mostly from a massive network of oil and gas pipelines, and investments in other polluting industries like paper and plastics." To "The Koch brothers’ massive investments and holdings are literally killing the planet, because their primary business is transporting gas and oil." Worth reading!
